On Thursday, June 25, a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was marked by clashes among its supporters, as internal tensions became publicly evident.
The disturbance involved rival groups, with some supporters chanting “Ken Must Go,” seemingly in reference to Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament and past presidential aspirant. The discontented supporters, many adorned with red headbands, confronted Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, attempting to obstruct his vehicle as he attempted to exit the meeting venue.
The situation rapidly intensified, leading to a physical confrontation between some individuals and the supporters trying to impede the Minority Leader’s vehicle from leaving Alisa Hotel, where the meeting took place. Videos circulating on social media displayed scenes of supporters chanting slogans and voicing their frustration, though no official explanation for the protest was provided.
The incident is largely believed to be related to recent comments made by Kennedy Agyapong concerning the party’s leadership and performance. The former presidential aspirant recently criticised the NPP for what he perceived as its failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital. His remarks followed reports that members of the Minority Caucus were denied access to the facility during a visit.
The NEC meeting was convened as part of the party’s ongoing efforts to evaluate its internal affairs and discuss preparations for future political activities.
