President John Dramani Mahama has outlined government’s decisive action to clear the accumulated waste at Agbogloshie, describing the exercise as an important step towards restoring sanitation, protecting public health and reclaiming the area for productive use.
The operation will deploy DRIP equipment, including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, private road contractors, metropolitan and municipal assemblies, and other state institutions.
The President said the waste, estimated at about one million tonnes, will be evacuated to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site, with the exercise expected to take about 90 days.
He said the reclaimed land will make way for the proposed Agbogloshie Urban Land Renewal Project, including an Industrial Park and a major textile factory to create employment for young people.
President Mahama also directed that measures be put in place to ensure the site does not become a dumping ground again, stressing the need for sustained enforcement, reliable waste collection and responsible waste disposal.
The exercise forms part of a broader nationwide waste management programme, including the provision of household waste bins, additional waste transfer stations, engineered landfill facilities and increased recycling capacity.
The President called on residents, traders, motorists, businesses and other stakeholders to cooperate with the teams undertaking the exercise as government works to restore sanitation, dignity and environmental safety to Agbogloshie.
