The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, joined the Management, Governing Council, staff, students, and invited guests of University of Health and Allied Sciences for the 2nd Session of the University’s 10th Congregation held in Ho, where a total of 1,097 students graduated.
In his welcome address, Chairman of the UHAS Governing Council, Prof. Kodzo Gavua, commended faculty members for their phenomenal role in preparing students to meet professional standards. He noted that UHAS has cumulatively produced about 13,000 health professionals over the years and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of clinical competence, integrity, and ethical practice in line with global standards. He also expressed appreciation to government for its continuous support in improving infrastructure and facilities within the University and urged graduands to uphold integrity, courage, and professionalism in their careers.
Presenting the University’s report, Vice Chancellor Prof. Lydia Aziato highlighted challenges relating to infrastructure and staffing, explaining that the situation continues to affect student intake and expansion. She appealed to the Regional Minister to support efforts toward securing financial clearance for the recruitment of additional staff and investment in infrastructure development.
Guest Speaker, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah- former Minister of Health and Ambassador to Netherlands, who also delivered the 10th UHAS Evans Atta Mills Lecture, was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of her immense contributions to Ghana’s health sector and public service.
Addressing the congregation, Hon. James Gunu congratulated the graduands and described UHAS as one of Ghana’s leading institutions for health training, research, and national development. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing infrastructure and accommodation deficits within the University and highlighted ongoing works on the Multi-Purpose Laboratory Complex as well as planned road projects within and around the campus.
The Minister also outlined key government interventions in the health sector, including the Free Primary Healthcare initiative, strengthening of the National Health Insurance Scheme, the rollout of MahamaCare, and investments in specialized healthcare delivery. He encouraged the graduands to uphold excellence, discipline, and professionalism as they begin their service to the nation.
Following the ceremony, the Director of Works at UHAS, Ms. Ruth Xorladem Aryiteey, took the Regional Minister on a tour of the Multi-Purpose Laboratory Complex to assess the progress of work on the facility.
