The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says government will soon engage unemployed health professionals as volunteers under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
According to him, the move is to help solve staff shortages in health facilities while giving unemployed nurses, midwives, and other health workers the opportunity to gain experience and support healthcare delivery.
Speaking to journalists, the minister said the volunteers will receive monthly stipends, similar to National Service allowances, and will work alongside about 16,000 health workers expected to be recruited this year.
Mr. Akandoh explained that the initiative is a temporary measure to strengthen healthcare services, especially at the primary healthcare level, as government continues efforts to recruit more health professionals permanently.
