A young boy, Jonathan Quaicoe, has won the admiration of many after returning a bag containing €3,000 and GH¢1,000 left behind by a female passenger travelling from Accra to Koforidua.
Quaicoe, who works as a loading boy around Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region, reportedly found the bag while on duty and kept it intact until police traced it to him.
According to information gathered, the woman had boarded a commercial Toyota Hiace at Ghana Flag in Accra heading to Koforidua. Upon arrival, she realized her bag containing the money and other personal items was missing and reported the matter at the Koforidua Central Police Station.
The New Juaben South Police Command immediately launched investigations and dispatched a team of personnel and drivers to Accra to trace the vehicle and the circumstances surrounding the missing bag.
Through their enquiries, the bag was found to be in the possession of Jonathan Quaicoe. When approached by investigators, he did not deny having it but willingly handed it over to the police with all contents intact.
The New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, ASP Augustine Asante Kusi, highly commended Quaicoe for his honesty and integrity, noting that despite struggling to make a living as a loading boy by the roadside, he resisted the temptation to take advantage of the huge sum.
According to ASP Asante Kusi, Quaicoe did not take a pesewa from the money before returning it.
For his exemplary conduct, the Police rewarded him with a brand-new mobile phone, while the owner of the money also rewarded him for his honesty.
ASP Asante Kusi urged the public to emulate Quaicoe’s example by returning lost items such as money, bags and phones to the police to help locate rightful owners, stressing that honesty promotes public trust and a safer society.
Jonathan Quaicoe’s action, at a time when many are facing economic hardship, has become a shining example that integrity should not be compromised for personal gain.
