The government has officially launched Phase I of a major initiative to bolster local tomato production in Ghana, in a bid to drastically reduce the national tomato importation bill and foster sustainable agricultural transformation.
The launch, which took place yesterday in the Volta Region, is being undertaken in partnership with Farmmate Ghana Limited.
According to details of the project, it is anchored on three core strategic goals:
– Import Substitution: Moving from reliance on imports to sustainable local production
– Economic Empowerment: Improving the livelihoods of local farmers and creating widespread employment
– Value Addition: Investing in processing capacity to move beyond raw output and increase the market value of produce.
This Phase, which covers the 2026 – 2027 season, has a viable target of initial production of 100,000 tonnes across 10,000 hectares, with a long-term goal of reaching 400,000 tonnes annually and beyond in the various districts of Ghana.
The initiative is seen as a major step towards achieving food self-sufficiency and strengthening Ghana’s agricultural value chain.
