The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has intervened to support a 5-year-old girl found hawking okro along the Tamale–Yendi Highway at Vittin.
The child, later identified as Mariama Alhassan, was seen struggling to cross the busy highway with a pan of fresh okro on her head.
Moved by the sight, the DVLA CEO stopped his vehicle and engaged the little girl. She was unable to clearly explain where she was coming from or why she was selling at such a young age.
The CEO then sought the assistance of a passerby to help locate her home. Upon arrival, her elder cousin explained that Mariama’s father had passed away and that she often sold okro after school to support the family. However, it was evident that her school attendance was irregular.
Touched by Mariama’s situation, the DVLA CEO donated GH₵10,000 to support her welfare. He instructed the family to stop sending her out to sell and pledged to regularly monitor her education, welfare, and overall development.
The kind gesture has been commended as a step toward protecting vulnerable children and ensuring they are allowed to enjoy a safe childhood and access to education.
