President John Dramani Mahama says unpaid electricity arrears led to the shutdown of Juapong Textiles Limited (JTL), after ECG disconnected power to the factory.
Speaking during the Volta Region Resetting Tour at Ho Technical University, the President said the government is now moving to revive the factory with a new investor.
“The factory was working when ECG came to turn off the power due to arrears, and that contributed to the closure of the JTL factory,” President Mahama said.
The President said the return of JTL will go beyond textiles.
“The revitalization of this factory will create sustainable jobs in the Juapong area, it will strengthen Ghana’s value chain, and reposition Juapong as a vibrant industrial hub. This complements our broader investment in Agriculture, Commerce and Infrastructure,” he stated.
He confirmed that a strategic investor will take over and expand production to include other commodities aside from textiles.
COTTON SUPPLY DEAL WITH BENIN
To solve the raw material challenge, President Mahama announced a key trade agreement.
“Arrangements have been made to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Benin government to feed the factory in Ghana with cotton,” he said.
The President assured traditional leaders and JTL workers that work will begin soon.
“Very soon, the Transaction Advisor will bring the Strategic Investor to visit the factory and start the design for modernization,” he assured.
“The coming back of the Juapong factory will be one of the biggest factories,” he added.
Community members say the revival of JTL is critical to reducing unemployment and boosting local businesses in Juapong.
