The Volta Regional Minister, Honorable James Gunu, delivered a comprehensive update on ongoing governmental development initiatives within the Volta Region during a General Meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs held in Ho on Friday, June 19, 2026.
This meeting convened traditional leaders and senior government officials to assess progress on key interventions and reinforce collaboration on regional development priorities.
Government Advocates for Transparency and Accountability
In an effort to enhance transparency and accountability, the Minister invited leaders from various departments and agencies to the meeting, allowing them to address questions and concerns raised by members of the House of Chiefs directly.
This approach enabled traditional authorities to engage with technical officials regarding project implementation and service delivery within their jurisdictions.
Summary of Major Development Projects
In his address, Hon. Gunu highlighted substantial advancements across several sectors, including education, health, water supply, agriculture, roads, tourism, coastal protection, and broader economic development.
He revealed that the region is currently benefiting from 271 GETFund projects, alongside the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
Additional interventions include the completion of five health kiosks, ongoing road construction under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme, and the establishment of 18 24-Hour Economy Markets across the region.
Strategic Infrastructure and Economic Projects
The Minister also provided updates on several flagship infrastructure projects anticipated to reshape the region’s economic landscape.
These projects include:
– The Keta Port and Harbour Development Project
– The Blekusu Sea Defence Phase II Project
– The Sogakope Water Supply Project
– The proposed Amedzofe-Biakpa Zipline Project, which is projected to become the longest zipline in West Africa upon completion
He emphasized that these projects are expected to enhance tourism, improve livelihoods, bolster coastal protection, and strengthen the region’s economic foundation.
Agricultural Interventions and Job Creation
Regarding agriculture, Hon. Gunu underscored government support programs aimed at enhancing local food production and livelihoods.
He disclosed the distribution of approximately 180,000 birds under the Akukor Nkitinkiti Programme, among other interventions designed to support farmers and expand agribusiness opportunities in the region.
Interior Minister Praises Traditional Leaders
The Minister for the Interior, Honorable Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, also addressed the assembly, commending traditional authorities for their ongoing role in maintaining peace and security in the Volta Region.
He emphasized that peace is a critical foundation for national development and urged continued collaboration between chiefs, security agencies, and the government to preserve the region’s reputation as one of the most peaceful in the country.
