Two individuals have tragically lost their lives following the collapse of a building in Cape Coast, which occurred after heavy rainfall affected parts of the Central Regional capital in the early hours of Sunday, June 21.

The deceased have been identified by hospital authorities as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported a rapid response to the incident, involving a collapsed single-room structure at Gyagyaano, located behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, where four individuals were trapped beneath the debris.

Rescue teams from the Cape Coast Metropolitan and Central Regional Fire Service headquarters promptly initiated an operation and successfully extricated all four victims from the wreckage.

The victims, comprising one male and three females, were transported by the National Ambulance Service to the Ewim Polyclinic for medical treatment.

However, subsequent examinations at the hospital confirmed the deaths of Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa.

Preliminary investigations by the Central Regional GNFS indicate that the building’s collapse was due to heavy rainfall compromising its structural integrity.

The Fire Service has advised residents residing in older mud houses and buildings displaying signs of structural deterioration to seek professional evaluations and evacuate any structures deemed unsafe, especially during the rainy season.
