The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive prohibiting extravagant post-examination celebrations on the premises of Senior High Schools.

As stated in a communiqué signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, this decision is in response to increasing concerns regarding parents and guardians engaging in ostentatious displays following the completion of final examinations by their wards. These celebrations have included the giving of expensive gifts such as motor vehicles and money bouquets.

Rationale for the Ban

The GES has articulated that this practice undermines the essence of academic achievement and poses several risks, including:

– Socio-economic disparities among students.
– A shift in focus from educational accomplishments to materialism.
– Psychological distress for students whose families cannot afford such displays.

Enforcement Measures

The directive, which is effective immediately, instructs school heads to ensure strict adherence to the policy. The GES has cautioned that any school head found to be condoning or permitting such practices will face disciplinary actions.
