Police officers from the Volta Regional capital, Ho, in collaboration with their counterparts in Tema, have successfully intercepted 5,039 wrapped parcels suspected to contain narcotic drugs at Afienya on the Tema–Akosombo Highway.
The suspected substances, concealed within 63 maxi sacks, were being transported in a Howo China tipper truck bearing the registration number GN 2287-24.
Two individuals, identified as Solomon Akuaku, aged 26, the driver, and James Tetteh, aged 31, the driver’s assistant, were apprehended to assist with the ongoing investigations.
According to a source at the Police Headquarters in Accra, the Volta Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) received intelligence regarding the movement of the truck, suspected of transporting contraband from the Juapong area towards Tema.
Acting upon this intelligence, officers from Ho coordinated with their counterparts in Tema to monitor and track the vehicle. A separate team, led by the Tema Night Duty Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agyemfra Amanor, strategically positioned themselves at the Star Oil Filling Station near Afienya to support the operation.
The truck was subsequently observed approaching from the Akosombo direction and was halted for inspection. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed the suspected narcotic substances concealed within the sacks.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects reportedly identified an individual known only as “Red” as the owner of the consignment and indicated that the cargo was destined for Ada.
Police investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact nature of the substances and to apprehend all individuals connected to the operation.
