The Sugarcane Farmers Association of Ghana (SUFAG) has decided to suspend its planned demonstration against the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
In a statement released on Sunday, June 14, the association indicated that this decision was the result of a high-level intervention and preliminary discussions involving prominent political and traditional leaders from the Central Region.
Previously, in a statement dated May 31, 2026, the association had expressed its disappointment regarding the ongoing inactivity of the factory, which had been inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama on May 30, 2016.
According to SUFAG, the factory has remained idle and is gradually deteriorating, despite years of oversight by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry. The association noted that this situation has deprived thousands of sugarcane farmers of the economic opportunities and benefits they had anticipated from the project.
Furthermore, SUFAG explained that the decision to suspend their planned action came after appeals were made by the Member of Parliament for the KEEA Constituency, the Central Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA), the Paramount Chief of the Komenda Traditional Area, and a member of the Interim Management Committee of the Komenda Sugar Factory.
The association mentioned that these leaders have requested additional time to engage with the relevant authorities regarding the concerns raised by sugarcane farmers and the future of the Komenda Sugar Factory.
“As a law-abiding association, SUFAG has honored this request in the interest of dialogue and peaceful engagement,” stated Okatakyi Nana Kweku Ackon, Director of Communications for SUFAG.
Despite the suspension of the protest, SUFAG emphasized that its stance on the issue remains unchanged.
