Traditional authorities in Dambai have officially conducted the customary rites to inaugurate the 2026 new yam season, thereby facilitating the commencement of yam trading within the Municipality.
The announcement, disseminated via a public notice, indicated the lifting of the traditional prohibition on the sale and consumption of newly harvested yams prior to the performance of the annual rites.
Following the successful observance of these customary rituals, yam farmers from Dambai and neighboring communities have been encouraged to commence the sale of their produce at the Dambai Market starting July 2026.
This traditional ceremony, deeply embedded in the local customs, is conducted annually to express gratitude to God and the ancestors for a fruitful farming season, while also seeking blessings for ongoing peace, prosperity, and abundant harvests.
Residents, traders, and buyers are now permitted to purchase and consume newly harvested yams without infringing upon traditional customs.
The initiation of the new yam trading season is anticipated to enhance commercial activities at the Dambai Market, which serves as a significant agricultural trading hub in the Oti Region.
Madam Emelia Yaa Dankwa, Mr. Robert Nkrabia, along with other market women and yam traders, have expressed optimism that the commencement of trading will increase yam supply, stabilize prices, and improve the incomes of farmers and other stakeholders within the agricultural value chain.
Nana Kwaku Beyennor II, the Chief of Dambai, along with his traditional leaders, has urged all farmers to capitalize on the official opening by bringing quality produce to the market while adhering to acceptable market practices to ensure orderly trading.
They have also called upon traders and the public to collaborate in maintaining peace and harmony throughout the marketing season, emphasizing that the observance of traditional customs continues to play a vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of the area while fostering local economic development.
