Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has commenced controlled spillage from the Weija Dam after water levels rose to 45.2 feet, nearing the dam’s 46-foot threshold.
According to GWL, the rise follows heavy rainfall upstream within the Densu River catchment area and its tributaries.
The company says the spillage, which started today, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, is a precautionary measure to protect the dam and manage rising water levels.
GWL is urging all residents living downstream to evacuate immediately to avoid flooding and other dangers associated with the exercise.
It has also called on NADMO, District Assemblies, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other stakeholders to take precautionary measures and support evacuation efforts.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, and surrounding areas.
GWL says it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as it evolves. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and comply with all safety directives.
