A 45-year-old man has been arrested for attempting to murder a farmer on his farm at Abotia-Dorfor in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The suspect, identified as Apeti Afeletey from Fodzoku-Afukpakofe, reportedly attacked the farmer on his farm yesterday around 4:00pm.
According to reports, the farmer was working on his farm when he suddenly noticed a shadow behind him. Upon raising his head, he saw the suspect approaching naked with rasta hair, which threw him into fear.
The victim shouted for help, attracting a neighbouring farmer who quickly placed a phone call to community members. The youth of Abotia rushed to the scene, rescued the farmer and apprehended the suspect.
Upon interrogation, the suspect showed the youth where he had hidden the motorbike he used. When they got to the location, the motorbike was found hidden in the bush with some of his rasta hair on it. The suspect was then taken together with the motorbike to the palace of the Chief of Abotia, Togbe Korku Mensah.
At the palace, he mentioned his community and family, prompting the chief to invite them. The family confirmed he is their son and stated that he has no history of mental illness.
According to his uncle, the suspect works at a galamsey site and had returned home about a week ago for his late mother’s burial. On the day of the incident, he reportedly took his junior brother’s motorbike at about 10:00am under the pretext of taking an aunt to the clinic. His phone was switched off throughout the day until around 5:45pm when the family received a call that he had attempted to murder a farmer at Abotia.
The family expressed shock over the incident, revealing that the suspect is married with children.
The victim has since been taken to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect has been handed over to the police together with the motorbike for further investigation.
