Tomato farmers in the Ada East and West Districts of the Greater Accra Region have called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to investigate the widespread dying of tomato seedlings after transplanting.

The farmers say the losses have put the 2026 farming season at risk, with huge investments in seeds, inputs and labour already affected.

Mr. Bernard Mawutor Ametepe, who spoke on behalf of the affected communities, told GNA that farmers followed recommended agronomic practices, raising concerns about the quality of the seeds used.

According to him, the damage affects both smallholder and commercial farmers in communities including Kasseh, Koluedor, Tehey, Luhour and Dorgobom.

“To finance the 2026 planting season, many farmers secured loans through local rural banks and microfinance institutions. With seed, input and labour investments rendered unrecoverable, farmers face imminent distress and long-term indebtedness,” he said.

He said the situation could affect household income, food security, and the domestic tomato supply chain, and discourage youth from entering farming.

Mr. Ametepe noted that concerns about tomato seed quality have persisted in the area for about 15 years, and called on MoFA to constitute a technical team of crop scientists, seed inspectors, and plant pathologists to assess the affected farms and trace the source of the seed batches.

He said farmers are ready to cooperate with investigators by providing access to farms and information to help determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
