The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has closed down Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality following violent reprisal attacks that led to the burning and destruction of several structures in both schools.
The incident, which occurred at about 2:00am on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, left six students of Okuapeman SHS (OKUASS) hospitalised after sustaining injuries.
According to the Headmaster of Okuapeman SHS, four of the injured students have been treated and discharged, while two are still on admission.
The Visual Arts studio, teachers’ office and seven other classrooms at Okuapeman SHS were burnt, including examination papers and certificates.
Similarly, the storeroom and boys’ washroom at Mount Sinai Senior High School were also burnt.
REGSEC, after inspecting the extent of damage at both schools, directed the closure of the schools. Students of Mount Sinai SHS were expected to leave campus before 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 2, while students of Okuapeman SHS are to leave on the morning of Thursday, September 3.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Dr. Ivy Asantewaa, who addressed the students, described the situation as unfortunate and said the Ghana Education Service will not shield any student involved.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Owusu-Bempah, expressed disgust about how students attacked police officers who were deployed to the schools at the early stages of the incident and assured that all perpetrators will be fished out and prosecuted.
Chairperson of REGSEC and Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, expressed disappointment, especially at a time government is working to retool and enhance facilities at SHSs across the country.
She said investigations are ongoing and all suspects will be dealt with according to law.
“We are building a nation, we are not destroying a nation. We are resetting and that includes resetting you. Investigations are going on, those who started throwing the stones will not be allowed to go scot-free,” she said.
