A 22-year-old man, identified as Felix, has been butchered following a violent land dispute at Belekofe, a community near New Akrade in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.
According to Felix, he was on the farm with his father at Belekofe when a gang of men armed with weapons confronted them and ordered them to leave the land, claiming ownership of it.
Felix said the land in question is VRA-acquired land given to his father for resettlement. His father insisted on not leaving, resulting in the men allegedly attacking him.
The victim said he attempted to prevent the attack on his father, which led to a conflict during which he was butchered.
Speaking to the media, the victim’s brother, who was also injured in the incident, said he received a distress call from his junior brother that they were under attack. He said he mobilized some young men and rushed to the farm, where the attack was ongoing, leading to a retaliation.
He disclosed that several conflicts have occurred over the same piece of land. According to him, the case has been reported multiple times to the Police, VRA authorities and other stakeholders, but no concrete action has been taken.
He explained that the land was allocated to their fathers by the Volta River Authority (VRA) as part of a resettlement package in 1990. Following the death of their fathers, some families have begun laying claim to the land, resulting in recurrent violent clashes that have often led to bloodshed.
Seeking peace and respect for the law, the family is calling on all stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, the District Chief Executive, and the Police Commander, to intervene urgently.
They warned that if they are attacked again without any intervention from authorities, they may be forced to defend themselves.
Police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
