A 32-year-old junior pastor has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Nsuta Circuit Court after pleading guilty to defrauding a teacher under the pretext of securing her a teaching job in Malaysia.
The convict, Stephen Yaw Gyamfi of the Blessed Gate Worship Centre at Mim in the Ahafo Region, admitted to defrauding by false pretenses.
How the scam unfolded
According to court reports, the complainant, 41-year-old Abigail Darkwaa, a teacher at Onwe M/A 2 JHS near Ejisu, was introduced to the pastor in January 2025 by a colleague who claimed he could help her get a teaching job in Malaysia.
The pastor allegedly demanded US$4,300, equivalent to GH¢73,100 at the time, for visa processing and an airline ticket.
After collecting the money, Gyamfi reportedly disappeared and cut off all communication with the victim.
Court’s decision
The Nsuta Circuit Court sentenced him to 10 years behind bars following his guilty plea.
The case has sparked conversations online, with many warning: _“It is not everybody wearing a clerical collar you must trust.”_
Authorities are urging job seekers to verify all overseas job offers through the Ghana Education Service, licensed recruitment agencies, and official embassies to avoid falling victim to similar scams.
