The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has cut the sod for the construction of a new day Senior High School at Pantang in a bid to expand access to secondary education in the constituency.
The sod-cutting ceremony took place on August 5, 2026, after weeks of discussions with the E.P. Church Ghana, which secured the land for the project.
“Ayawaso a one-stop constituency for education”
Speaking at the event, Dumelo said the project is driven by his desire to give students in the area more options beyond the existing school.
“I want to make Ayawaso a one-stop constituency when it comes to education, quality education. We only have one secondary school, which is the STEM, but that is more science related. And so I decided to look, let me look for land and let me construct a secondary school here,” he said.
Built by the community, for the community
The MP noted that the school will be a true community project.
“The interesting thing is that it’s for the community by the community. And so the workers, everybody will be from the community. The students of course will be from the community, and it’s going to be fully funded by myself and a group of friends,” he added.
According to Dumelo, support has already started coming in, with donations of sandstone, cement, iron rods and cash towards the project.
He is targeting a nine-month construction period, with the first batch of students expected to enter the school by September 2027.
Other community projects
This is not Dumelo’s first community-focused initiative since becoming MP.
In January 2026, he distributed free fuel to taxi drivers at a filling station in Haatso, a move that earned him the nickname “MP papa paa” online.
He has also provided free buses for residents and students during transport difficulties and university vacation periods, and supported school feeding caterers with food items.
