KUMASI, Ashanti Region – Two individuals who posed as healthcare workers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital [KATH] have been convicted and fined by the Asokwa Circuit Court in Kumasi for impersonation, forgery, and illegal medical practice.
The convicts, 33-year-old Evelyn Ataa Amankwah, a private nurse from Brofoyedu, and 25-year-old Collins Agyemang Badu, a student nurse from Ampabame, each pleaded guilty and were fined GH¢12,000 — equivalent to 1,000 penalty units.
How the Operation Worked
According to the prosecution, the pair began their illegal activities in June 2026. Evelyn allegedly paid GH¢200 to a printing press operator in Adum, Kumasi, to produce fake KATH identity cards.
The forged IDs listed Evelyn as a “Disease Control Officer” and Collins as an “Enrolled Nurse”.
Armed with the counterfeit cards, the duo reportedly visited shops and business premises in Asokwa, introducing themselves as public health officials from KATH. They offered medical services and distributed suspected illicit drugs, vaccines, and medications to unsuspecting traders and residents.
Arrest and Conviction
Their scheme unraveled after a legitimate KATH public health officer grew suspicious and alerted hospital security. Security personnel intercepted the suspects and handed them over to police.
During investigation, police retrieved the fake KATH ID cards, vaccines, and various medicines from them. Both admitted to the offences in their caution statements.
They were charged with conspiracy to commit forgery, forgery of documents, and practising medicine without registration* under the Criminal Offences Act and the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act.
Before Her Honour Vida Achiaa Yeboah at Asokwa Circuit Court Two, the two pleaded guilty with explanation and were convicted on their own plea.
In addition to the fine, Evelyn Ataa Amankwah was sentenced to one day in prison. The custodial sentence was however suspended by the court due to her pregnancy.
Health Authorities React
The case has renewed concerns about impersonation within Ghana’s healthcare system and the dangers of unqualified persons administering medical treatment.
Health authorities are urging the public to always verify the identity of healthcare workers and to report any suspicious persons claiming to represent medical institutions without proper authorization.
