Introduction
God often uses men and women as vessels to bless, teach, guide, and encourage His people. However, one of the greatest mistakes believers make is becoming overly familiar with God’s servants to the point of losing respect for the grace and anointing upon their lives. Familiarity can cause people to miss divine blessings, instructions, and breakthroughs.
Mark 6:4 – “A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”

What is Over-Familiarity?

Over-familiarity is becoming so accustomed to a person that you no longer respect, value, or honor their God-given position and authority.
The people of Nazareth knew Jesus as the carpenter’s son, but they failed to recognize Him as the Messiah.

▪︎Dangers of Over-Familiarity with Your Prophet▪︎

1. It Can Make You Miss Your Miracle

The people of Nazareth could not receive many miracles because they saw Jesus merely as an ordinary man.
Mark 6:5-6
“And he could there do no mighty work…”
When honor is absent, faith diminishes, and miracles are hindered.

2. It Can Lead to Disobedience

When people become too familiar with their prophet, they begin to ignore instructions and godly counsel.
2 Chronicles 20:20
“Believe in the Lord your God… believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”
Many blessings are lost because people stop taking prophetic instructions seriously.

3. It Breeds Contempt and Criticism

Over-familiarity often leads to fault-finding, gossip, and criticism.
Numbers 12:1-10
Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses, and God judged Miriam with leprosy because she failed to honor God’s chosen servant.

4. It Can Rob You of Spiritual Growth

A believer who loses respect for spiritual authority may stop learning and receiving correction.
Proverbs 9:9
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser.”
Growth stops when teachability disappears.

5. It Can Cause Loss of Divine Covering

God places spiritual leaders over His people for guidance and protection.
Hebrews 13:17
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves…”
Rejecting spiritual guidance can expose a believer to unnecessary battles.

6. It Can Lead to Dishonor Before God

God expects His servants to be honored for the work they do.
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
“Esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.”
Dishonoring God’s servant is ultimately dishonoring the God who called him.

▪︎How to Avoid Over-Familiarity▪︎

1. Maintain Honor

Honor the office and calling God has placed upon your prophet.
Romans 13:7
“Honour to whom honour.”

2. Remain Teachable

Always receive instruction with humility.
James 1:21

3. Guard Your Tongue

Avoid gossip, criticism, and negative discussions about God’s servant.
Psalm 141:3

4. Pray for Your Prophet

Instead of criticizing, intercede for him.
1 Timothy 2:1-2

5. Focus on the Grace of God Upon His Life

Look beyond human weaknesses and appreciate God’s calling.
1 Samuel 16:7

NOTE:

Over-familiarity with a prophet can hinder miracles, block spiritual growth, promote disobedience, and cause believers to miss God’s blessings. While remembering that prophets are human beings, believers should maintain honor, respect, and a teachable spirit toward those God has called to lead them.
Mark 6:4
Prayer: “Father, give me the wisdom to honor the spiritual leaders You have placed in my life. Help me never to become careless, disrespectful, or familiar with the grace You have placed upon them. Let me receive every blessing, instruction, and impartation You have prepared for me through Your servants, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
