The sole educational institution in the community has languished in a state of disrepair for several years. The deteriorating roof, weakened wooden framework, and crumbling classrooms have transformed what ought to be a secure learning environment into a symbol of neglect.

Residents assert that, despite their substantial contributions to Ghana’s agricultural economy, fundamental social amenities remain inaccessible to them.

The situation in Garkuon highlights a broader national issue. The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has identified child labor as a significant impediment to education and development, depriving many children of the opportunity for a safe and dignified future.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, over 1.1 million children aged between five and 17 were involved in economic activities in 2023, with more than 458,000 of them not attending school.

Observers caution that conditions akin to those in Garkuon may exacerbate the challenges already confronting vulnerable children in rural communities.

Each school day, students congregate with aspirations of securing a brighter future through education. However, the conditions under which they learn convey a concerning narrative.

Residents report that the school building has been deteriorating for over four years. Continuous exposure to rain and harsh weather has exacerbated the situation, rendering parts of the structure unsafe for both students and teachers.

“The school is in poor condition and requires renovation. Additionally, we need accommodation for teachers. Most of the teachers assigned to the school do not reside in the community, which affects their attendance and punctuality,” a resident remarked.
