ACCRA, Ghana – The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment on Tuesday, July 22, 2026, officially presented the revised Kindergarten to Primary Six [KG–P6] Curriculum to the Minister for Education at the Ministry of Education in Accra.[NaCCA]
The presentation marks a major milestone in Ghana’s education reform agenda.
What’s New in the Revised Curriculum
Developed through extensive consultations with approximately 160 curriculum experts, the revised curriculum is designed to reduce curriculum overload and equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values and competencies needed for the 21st century.
Key reforms include:
– Strengthened Foundational Literacy
– Citizenship Education as a unified learning area integrating History, Civic Education and National Values
– Coding and Computational Thinking
– Digital Literacy
– Ethics and Values Education
The curriculum also embeds agricultural concepts within Integrated Science and recommends the introduction of Chinese as an optional foreign language from Primary One, alongside a standardised Arabic curriculum.
In terms of assessment, the revised curriculum adopts a competency-based approach with three performance standards: Basic, Attained and Deeper.
Minister Endorses Ghanaian Languages for Early Grades
Receiving the document, the Minister for Education commended NaCCA for its contribution to the sector.
The Minister endorsed the continued use of Ghanaian languages as the medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Basic Three to strengthen foundational literacy, while reaffirming English as the country’s official language.
Next Phase of Basic Education
The revised KG–P6 curriculum is expected to drive the next phase of basic education transformation by promoting learner-centred education, foundational literacy, digital competencies, ethical values and responsible citizenship.
The goal is to prepare every Ghanaian child for lifelong learning and national development.
