The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has advocated for the immediate suspension of rice imports for a period of no less than six months. This measure is proposed to facilitate the sale of existing stocks of domestically produced rice. The Association contends that such a suspension would offer essential relief to farmers, stabilize farm-gate prices, and restore confidence in the domestic rice market.
The Association has further highlighted that the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s (NAFCO) failure to procure surplus rice, as instructed by President John Dramani Mahama, has resulted in approximately 90% of local rice farmers being left with unsold stock. This situation persists despite numerous government interventions designed to support the sector.
