An alleged curse linked to recent deaths of two teachers, including the head teacher, has thrown Kobedi AME Zion Primary and Junior High School in the Sunyani West Municipality into shutdown, with staff abandoning classrooms over fear.

Teaching has stopped completely as remaining staff stay away from the school, leaving pupils without lessons and roaming during school hours.

The situation follows the sudden passing of Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, the school’s head teacher, and another colleague, which has left the school community unsettled.

By Monday, May 18, 2026, classrooms were locked and the school compound deserted, with no teachers or learners present.

Some residents claim the deaths have been linked in local accounts to a suspected curse allegedly triggered after accusations involving a student and school authorities.

The fear surrounding the incident has reportedly made teachers unwilling to return, with concerns about personal safety and spiritual risk driving the boycott.

A resident said the atmosphere in the community has become tense, with growing anxiety over what has happened.

“We are reliably informed that teachers have resolved to boycott classes and register their displeasure about the present happenings in the school,” the resident said.
