PARLIAMENT HOUSE, ACCRA – The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review presented by the government, describing it as deficient in detail and failing to address the pressing challenges facing Ghanaians.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, made the remarks on Thursday, July 23, in response to the review delivered by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The Effutu MP said the presentation was full of broad claims about government achievements but lacked the specifics and evidence needed to validate them.
> “This review is full of English with empty payments. The payments they say they have made – why didn’t they give us details?” Afenyo-Markin asked.
He criticized the budget review for lacking clarity and accountability, particularly on government expenditure, payments made, and the implementation of key policies.
The Minority Leader further questioned why the government did not provide comprehensive breakdowns of its spending, insisting that Parliament and the Ghanaian public deserve transparency on how state resources are being used.
> “Mr. Speaker, this review is uninspiring, and there is no inspiration in it. What we are experiencing in this country is persecution. You are persecuting people, and you are here telling us you are running an economy,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about the current political climate, alleging that some citizens were being targeted while the government claimed to be focused on economic management.
He challenged the government’s claims of economic progress, arguing that the successes outlined in the report do not reflect the lived realities of many Ghanaians.
