President John Dramani Mahama has blamed unpaid electricity arrears for the shutdown of the once-thriving Juapong Textiles Limited (JTL), saying the power disconnection by ECG contributed directly to the factory’s collapse.
Speaking during the Volta Region Resetting Tour at *Ho Technical University, the President said the closure left many Juapong residents jobless despite the town’s huge economic potential.
“The factory was working when ECG came to turn off the power due to arrears, and that contributed to the closure of the JTL factory,” President Mahama stated.
New Investor, New Products
The President assured residents that the government is in the process of reviving the factory.
According to him, a strategic investor is set to take over JTL and expand production beyond textiles.
“He will not produce only textiles but can add other commodities,” Mahama said.
He further disclosed that the government has made arrangements with the *Benin government to supply cotton to feed the factory when it resumes operations.
“The coming back of the Juapong factory will be one of the biggest factories,” the President assured the people of Juapong and the Volta Region.
*Jobs and Local Economy*
Juapong Textiles Limited once employed hundreds of residents and supported many local businesses.
Community stakeholders say its revival could reduce unemployment, stimulate trade, and restore hope to young people and families in the area.
While acknowledging the role of social and community activities, residents say sustainable development and job creation must remain the top priority for Juapong.
