The ongoing branch elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Tongu Constituency have taken a new turn, marked by allegations of irregularities and the involvement of Junior High School students in the electoral process.
Discontented party members and candidates have accused the current Constituency Women’s Organizer, Madam Charity Boko, of misusing her position as an employee of the Ghana Education Service to enlist minors for the elections.
According to the complaints received, Madam Boko has allegedly collaborated with Madam Margaret Amu, the Headmistress of the Central Tongu District Assembly Girls Model School, who is contesting for the position of Deputy Women’s Organizer. Sources indicate that their objective is to displace the incumbent Deputy Women’s Organizer, Madam Emefa Yvette Gbeve.
The two individuals are accused of transporting students from the Girls Model School to various polling centers to vote for their preferred candidates. Eyewitnesses report that this activity is occurring with the apparent acquiescence of the election committee, which has allegedly permitted it to continue.
“This has resulted in altercations in numerous branches, as the school pupils are not recognized by the branch executives or members,” stated one aggrieved candidate to this reporter. Party members express concern that both Constituency and Regional Executives have remained silent on the issue despite the escalating tension. This situation has led to frustration among some members, who have threatened to resign from the NDC in Central Tongu if immediate action is not taken.
Further allegations suggest that the Member of Parliament for the area is financing the activities associated with the registration and transportation of the students.
The branch elections, which commenced on June 28, have already been plagued by additional complaints, including the unavailability of updated registers, violations of notice periods, and alleged interference by constituency executives with vested interests in the election outcomes.
Party stakeholders are now urging the NDC Regional and National leadership to intervene promptly to preserve the integrity of the branch elections and protect the party’s grassroots structures in Central Tongu.
Attempts to contact Madam Charity Boko, Madam Margaret Amu, and the Constituency Executives for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
