Mr. Eric Kontomah, the Kintampo North Municipal Director of Agriculture in the Bono East Region, has called for the enactment of bye-laws to control cattle herding and crop grazing in the municipality.
He expressed worry over growing conflicts between farmers and cattle herders whose animals graze and destroy farms, saying the situation now threatens security in the area.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kintampo, Mr. Kontomah disclosed that the directorate received about 30 reported cases of cattle grazing and farm destruction in 2025, estimated at about GH¢100,000.
This year alone, 28 reported cases of extensive destruction of rice, maize, cassava, and yam farms have been recorded, estimated at GH¢80,000, hence the need for a bye-law to bring the situation under control.
He said the proposed bye-law should compel cattle rearers to establish ranches to contain their animals.
Also speaking, Mr. Albert Akwesi Afful, Officer in-charge of the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate of the Municipal Assembly, described the activities of cattle herders as unfortunate, noting that the level of crop destruction is alarming and needs urgent attention.
He warned that if nothing is done immediately, the situation could escalate and disturb the prevailing peace in the municipality.
