Project under 24-Hour Economy to create 12,000 jobs and cut $400M poultry import bill

The Government of Ghana has signed a Heads of Terms agreement for a US$270 million investment into the National Poultry Transformation Programme, aimed at drastically reducing the country’s dependence on imported chicken.

The agreement was signed at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in Accra with four investment partners: UK-based agrifood investment company Agrium Capital, Petra Trust, Axis Pension Trust, and Ghana EXIM Bank.

Under the programme, which is being implemented through the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat (24H+), the country will process 20,000 tonnes of locally produced chicken annually in the first phase, with plans to scale up to 50,000 tonnes.

The deal is described as the largest UK agrifood investment in Ghana to date. It will support the development of a fully integrated poultry value chain covering feed production, breeding, hatchery operations, broiler farming, processing, cold-chain facilities, logistics and market access.

Ghana currently spends approximately US$400 million annually on chicken and other poultry imports. The project is expected to generate 12,000 direct jobs.

Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy, Augustus Goosie Tanoh, said: “This is a purposeful blend of foreign private capital and Ghanaian private capital, aligned to build this industry at scale.”
