Ghana has secured a $270 million investment to revamp its poultry sector under the National Poultry Transformation Programme.
The investment deal was signed at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in Accra between the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, UK-based Agrium Capital, Petra Trust, Axis Pension Trust, and Ghana EXIM Bank.
The project aims to boost local chicken production from an initial 20,000 tonnes annually to 50,000 tonnes at full scale, covering the entire poultry value chain from feed production and breeding to processing, cold-chain storage and distribution.
Ghana currently spends close to $400 million every year importing poultry, a situation the government says is unsustainable. The new programme is expected to cut import dependency, stabilize prices, and create some 12,000 direct jobs for Ghanaians.
Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Tanoh, described the deal as a strategic blend of foreign and local private capital to build the poultry industry at scale.
The British High Commission has hailed the project as the largest UK agrifood investment in Ghana to date.
