JUAPONG – Market women at Juapong in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region have threatened to abandon the newly constructed market facility and move back to the roadside to sell, citing extremely poor patronage.

According to the traders, since they were relocated into the new market, customers have refused to enter to buy from them. This, they say, is causing their perishable goods to go bad, while traders who defy the directive and sell along the roadside get all the buyers.

The frustrated market women lamented that they invest capital into their businesses but are making huge losses because the market remains empty throughout the day.

“The new market is very nice, but there are no buyers coming inside. Our tomatoes, pepper and fish are spoiling. Those selling by the road are making sales, so we will also go back to the roadside if nothing is done,” one of the traders told our reporter.

They are therefore calling on the North Tongu District Assembly, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders to as a matter of urgency intervene and enforce measures that will direct buyers into the main market.

They warned that if their concerns are not addressed immediately, they will have no option but to abandon the facility and return to the roadside to eke out a living.
