DAILY NEWSFLASH – Financial and leadership consultant, Dr. Dr. Ageorgia, has called on African families to prioritize financial education for children as a sustainable solution to ending generational poverty.
In an article titled *”Africa and Poverty”, Dr. Ageorgia noted that while most African parents desire a better future for their children, love and good intentions alone are not enough to break the cycle of poverty.
She observed that traditional business training methods, such as allowing children to sell in family shops or hawk during holidays, taught resilience and hard work but failed to teach financial management.
“Most children sold, but never knew where the money went. We did not learn about savings, investment, shares, or how wealth grows. The lesson stopped at ‘make sales and give the money to mummy or daddy’,” she stated.
Dr. Ageorgia also lamented the abandonment of practical saving cultures like the “money box” – a small tin where children saved coins until Christmas or Easter – which previously taught delayed gratification and goal-setting.
According to her, the assumption that topics like savings, shares and investments are too complex for children is a major factor fueling poverty.
“Poverty is not only about lack of money. It is also about lack of knowledge and lack of imagination,” she stressed.
The African Way Forward
Dr. Ageorgia proposed four practical steps to tackle poverty in African homes:
1. Teaching financial management at home from an early age, including budgeting and expense tracking.
2. Reviving and upgrading the money box culture into junior savings accounts and mobile money wallets for children.
3. Introducing children to financial products such as shares, cooperatives, and mutual funds in age-appropriate language.
4.* Expanding the definition of work beyond trading to include digital skills, agripreneurship, crafts, and innovation.
She emphasized that children learn what they see, and called on parents to openly discuss savings, investment, and giving at home.
“Ending poverty will not happen by shielding our children from suffering. It will happen by equipping their minds. Let us raise children who not only work hard, but also think big, save well, and invest wisely,” she added.
