DAILY NEWSFLASH – The District Health Director for Asuogyaman, Madam Rebecca Dede Bantey, has raised concerns over the increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases recorded in the district.
Speaking at the commissioning of a potable water system at Akwamufie, Madam Bantey said health facilities across the Asuogyaman District continue to record a steady rise in HIV cases.
She noted that while antiretroviral treatment is readily available for persons who test positive, a major challenge remains the reluctance of many residents to know their status.
“The serious issue is that people are afraid to test and know their HIV status. That fear is worsening the situation, especially among the youth,” she stated.
To address the problem, the District Health Directorate said it will embark on a house-to-house education campaign to sensitize residents and demonstrate the use of HIV self-testing kits.
Madam Bantey urged all residents to visit any health facility to test and know their status, assuring that persons who test positive will be immediately placed on treatment and supported by health officers.
She further called on traditional leaders, religious leaders, and community members to support public education efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
The District Health Director also issued a strong warning to persons who test positive but deliberately refuse treatment and continue to spread the infection.
“We will not hesitate to deal with such persons in accordance with the law,” she cautioned.
