BOLGATANGA – A young woman has died in a tragic road crash on Monday morning, July 28, after she was allegedly pursued by a Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officer in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region.
The incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. along the Tindonmolgo-Sherigu road near the Agaara Bridge.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was riding an unregistered Yamaha scooter when an MTTD officer on a motorbike allegedly chased her from Bolgatanga township toward the outskirts of the municipality in an attempt to arrest her.
Witnesses told A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah that the rider lost control after hitting a speed bump near the Akamengre house, close to the Agaara Bridge. She reportedly crashed heavily onto the road and sustained severe head injuries.
Eyewitnesses said the woman died at the scene. Residents covered her body with a cloth as they waited for emergency responders.
Some witnesses further alleged that the pursuing officer left the scene immediately after the crash. They claimed youth from Tindonmolgo attempted to chase the officer, but he managed to get to the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters where he reportedly sought refuge as angry residents gathered.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Investigations are expected to commence into the circumstances surrounding the crash and the alleged chase.
