ACCRA – Public concerns are mounting over the Ghana Education Service’s decision to charge applicants GH¢25 to check the status of teacher recruitment, with critics describing the move as unfair and exploitative.
A statement circulating online argues that while limited job opportunities are understandable, recruitment processes must be fair, transparent, and sensitive to the realities of trained young professionals ready to work.
> “The bigger question is: why were over 40,000 trained teachers allowed to apply at no cost, knowing very well that only 7,000 would be recruited, and later required to pay GHC 25 just to check whether they were successful or unsuccessful?” the statement asked.
The author noted that although GH¢25 may seem small to some, the numbers tell a different story.
> “Let us do the mathematics. If 40,000 applicants each pay GHC 25.00, that amounts to GH¢1 million.”
The statement warned that if this becomes the new strategy adopted by the Ministry of Education and GES, “then as a country, we have serious questions to answer.”
It concluded with a call for accountability:
> “Someone, somewhere, must listen, take responsibility and act.”
The issue has triggered widespread debate on social media, with many unemployed graduates demanding refunds and a full explanation on who authorized the fee and where the money is going.
