The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced plans to launch its long-awaited single regional currency, the ECO, in 2027.

The move forms part of efforts to deepen economic integration across West Africa.

According to ECOWAS, the proposed currency is expected to facilitate trade, reduce transaction costs, and strengthen economic cooperation among member states.

The ECO has been years in the making and is seen as a key step toward creating a single market and monetary zone in the region.

Stakeholders say the successful rollout will depend on member states meeting key convergence criteria on inflation, debt, and fiscal policy.
