Italian investors are targeting Ghana’s cocoa sector with a major 3,000-hectare mechanised cocoa development project.

A delegation from BF International, Italy’s largest agricultural group, led by Italian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Laura Ranalli, paid a courtesy call on the management of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to discuss the proposed partnership.

Dubbed the “Cocoa Connect Initiative”, the project aims to bring together public, private and scientific institutions to move Ghana’s cocoa industry beyond raw bean exports into semi-finished and finished cocoa products.

At the heart of the initiative is the plan to establish a 3,000-hectare technology-driven cocoa farm in Ghana.

COBOD Chief Executive, Dr. Ransford Annetey Abbey, welcomed the proposal and assured the delegation of full institutional, agronomic and technical support to set up the farm.

Dr. Abbey said the investment aligns with the government’s cocoa transformation agenda, which prioritizes local value addition and increased processing capacity.

He added that a specialized team of COCOBOD experts will support the project with research and technical services.

Both Ghana and Italy, he noted, stand to benefit by leveraging their strengths to expand global market share in the cocoa industry.
