The Bank of Ghana (BoG) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service has announced a nationwide crackdown on businesses and individuals who refuse to accept cedi coins as legal tender.

In a joint statement, the two institutions warned that refusing cedi coins is a violation of the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612).

Offenders could face fines, prosecution, and up to three (3) years’ imprisonment.

The BoG emphasized that all denominations of the Ghana cedi, including coins, remain legal tender and must be accepted for all transactions across the country.

The public has been urged to report any business or person that rejects cedi coins to the Police or the Bank of Ghana.
