The National Identification Authority (NIA) has officially declared that it is now prohibited for institutions and individuals to photocopy or visually inspect a Ghana Card for the purpose of identity verification during transactions.
Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, stated that biometric verification of the Ghana Card is now compulsory for all transactions necessitating identity authentication.
In a Facebook post dated Wednesday, July 15, Mr. Deku indicated that this new requirement is a result of the enactment of amendments to the National Identity Register Regulations, as outlined in Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2111, which was presented to Parliament three months prior and subsequently gazetted on Wednesday.
According to the amended regulations, institutions that persist in using photocopies or visual inspections of the Ghana Card for identity verification may incur fines ranging from 500 to 2,000 penalty units upon summary conviction.
Individuals who violate these regulations may also face fines between 50 and 500 penalty units.
