The 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration is scheduled to take place in Sunyani, Bono Region, on December 4, 2026, as announced by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The event will be held under the theme: “Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future.”
Mr. Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture, made this announcement during the official launch of the celebration in Accra. He noted that the Bono Region was chosen to host the event due to its significant agricultural potential and its contributions to national food production.
“The future of Ghana is intrinsically linked to the strength of our farmers. By supporting farmers, we secure our food supply, and in doing so, we safeguard the future of our nation,” he stated.
Mr. Opoku further indicated that the celebration would be preceded by a five-day National Agricultural Fair from November 30 to December 4, 2026. This fair will feature exhibitions from agribusinesses, research institutions, farmer-based organizations, mechanization service providers, financial institutions, and development partners.
Additionally, the fair will include presentations on innovation and research from universities and research institutions, a Bono Regional Focus Day, a tour for national award winners, and a National Farmers’ Forum aimed at addressing issues affecting the agricultural sector and the welfare of farmers.
The highlight of the celebration will be the National Farmers’ Day durbar and awards ceremony on December 4, which is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Opoku announced that 32 national award categories would be presented, including Overall National Best Farmer, National Best Female Farmer, National Best Youth Farmer, National Best Livestock Farmer, National Best Fish Farmer, National Best Cocoa Farmer, National Best Agricultural Extension Agent, and National Best Agricultural Researcher.
Regional and district awards will also be conferred to recognize outstanding farmers, schools, farmer-based organizations, and other institutions.
Mrs. Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, in a statement delivered on her behalf, emphasized that the celebration serves as a vital platform for acknowledging the contributions of farmers, fishers, and fish processors to food security, employment generation, and national development.
She urged for enhanced collaboration among government entities, the private sector, researchers, and development partners to foster innovation, sustainability, and responsible resource management in agriculture and fisheries.
Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, Bono Regional Minister, expressed the region’s honor in hosting the national event for the first time since its establishment and assured stakeholders of their commitment to ensuring a successful celebration.
National Farmers’ Day, instituted in 1985, is celebrated annually on the first Friday of December to recognize the contributions of farmers and fishers to Ghana’s socio-economic development and to promote agricultural productivity and food security.
