The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has allocated a total of GH¢132,000, along with food items and sanitation tools, to assist flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie, and Bubuashie. This initiative is part of immediate relief efforts following the recent heavy rains that adversely impacted numerous households and communities within the metropolis.
The comprehensive support package included GH¢130,000 in direct cash donations to the affected communities, an additional GH¢2,000 provided to a shop owner for vacating a drainway, 31 boxes of cooking oil containing 372 bottles, 120 bags of rice comprising 600 pieces of 25 kg bags, as well as eight wheelbarrows and eight shovels to aid affected residents and facilitate clean-up activities.
At Avenor, the Mayor presented GH¢50,000, 20 boxes of cooking oil, 300 bags of 25 kg rice, five wheelbarrows, and five shovels.
During his visit to Circle Neoplan Station, Hon. Allotey contributed GH¢30,000, four boxes of cooking oil, 75 pieces of 25 kg rice, three wheelbarrows, and three shovels to support flood victims and assist with debris clearance in the area.
The Mayor also visited North Kaneshie, including the Swanlake community and Ahonfe Close, where he provided GH¢20,000, four boxes of cooking oil containing 48 bottles, and 100 pieces of 5 kg bags of rice to the affected residents.
At Bubuashie Attico on Kanto Street in the Bubui Electoral Area, Hon. Allotey presented GH¢30,000, three boxes of cooking oil containing 36 bottles, and 125 pieces of 5 kg bags of rice, which were received by the community leader, Stella Yanky, on behalf of the affected residents.
In his interactions with the victims, Hon. Allotey stated that the donations were made on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Ernest Adomako, to express sympathy for the affected residents and assist them in managing the immediate consequences of the disaster.
He noted that the Assembly had recognized the challenges faced by residents, including the destruction of mattresses, cooking utensils, food items, and other personal belongings. He added that the AMA would return with further support following a comprehensive assessment of the affected households.
Hon. Allotey mentioned that the AMA had provided compactors to clear refuse from the affected communities at no cost and had deployed sanitation personnel to assist with the clean-up effort. He urged residents to refrain from disposing of waste in gutters and drains, as such actions obstruct drainage channels and exacerbate flooding.
He assured residents that the Assembly would continue to collaborate with community leaders and relevant agencies to clear drains, eliminate obstructions, and implement measures to mitigate flooding in the affected areas.
The Mayor encouraged the affected residents to remain united and cooperate with their community leaders to ensure the equitable distribution of relief items to those in greatest need.
The Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, expressed gratitude to the Mayor, President Mahama, the MP, and the AMA for their prompt response to the community’s plight.
He stated that the rice, cooking oil, cash, and sanitation tools would significantly aid the affected families and facilitate the community’s recovery process.
