The Gbese District Court has sentenced Mr. Fidelis Samuel Mensah to a 30-day term of imprisonment for impersonating an employee of the National Identification Authority (NIA) and defrauding members of the public who were seeking services related to the Ghana Card.
Investigations revealed that Mr. Mensah falsely represented himself as a staff member of the NIA and offered assistance to applicants with Ghana Card registration and update services at the NIA Regional Office in Accra. During this process, he unlawfully obtained cash, mobile phones, and personal documents from unsuspecting victims under false pretenses.
His arrest resulted from a joint operation executed by the NIA Police Investigation Unit in collaboration with officials of the National Identification Authority. During court proceedings, Mr. Mensah admitted guilt to charges of theft and defrauding by false pretenses.
The court subsequently convicted him based on his guilty plea and imposed a 30-day imprisonment sentence.
The National Identification Authority has urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with unauthorized individuals who purport to offer shortcuts or special assistance with Ghana Card services. The Authority advised citizens to seek services exclusively from officially designated NIA offices and authorized personnel.
The NIA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the public from fraudulent activities and ensuring the integrity of the national identification registration process.
