The captain of the South African football team, Ronwen Williams, has issued a call for unity among football enthusiasts across the continent. He emphasized the importance of separating politics from sports in light of recent online criticism directed at him.
This situation arose after a number of Africans publicly supported Mexico over South Africa, citing ongoing xenophobic attacks against citizens of other African nations residing in South Africa. Mexico subsequently defeated South Africa 2-0 in the match.
Following this defeat, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams expressed his disappointment on social media regarding the decision of some Africans to support Mexico rather than South Africa.
Williams later clarified that he had been criticized for remarks he asserts he never made concerning African support for Mexico. He reiterated his longstanding commitment to promoting unity and solidarity among African nations.
In a conversation with reporters prior to South Africa’s second World Cup match against Czechia, Williams stated: “I can recall, I have always maintained that, as Africans, we are united and support one another. In both good and challenging times, we all have our own political issues, problems, and battles to face at home.”
