The Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has reiterated that construction works on the Koforidua China Mall will remain suspended until the investors implement the key drainage recommendations.
At a crunch meeting held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in Koforidua, the minister insisted that all activities at the site must stop until the recommendations are implemented.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Regional Coordinating Council, New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, EPA, NADMO, Department of Urban Roads, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and representatives of the investors.
Mrs. Awatey acknowledged that the completed project would help position Koforidua as a commercial hub and create job opportunities. However, she stressed that development must be carried out responsibly to safeguard lives and property.
According to the minister, the investors’ project consultant, Engineer Mark Nyameche, recommended that the main stream along the site be developed into a rectangular, concrete-lined channel with provision for dry weather flow. She added that the existing concrete box culvert upstream must also be replaced with a 2m x 2m culvert to meet Ghana Highway Authority specifications.
She, however, expressed shock that the investors had refused to implement the technical drainage measures recommended by their own consultant. “Until the drains are done, works on the shopping mall remain stalled,” she said.
It would be recalled that residents of Koforidua, most of whom are from Nkubem and Daasebre Estate, raised concerns about possible flooding when the project started last year and called on the minister to intervene. Following an inspection with state oversight and compliance agencies, Mrs. Awatey urged the developers to heed all engineering advice, noting that the site is a wetland.
Nine months on, the project is about 90 per cent complete without the recommended drains and culverts, which is why the suspension remains in force.
