A dangerous and unlawful practice is gradually becoming normal across our markets, transport stations, provision shops, and small businesses where many Ghanaians are being embarrassed, insulted, or denied service simply because they are using 10, 20, and 50 pesewa coins for transactions.
Let the facts be clear: the Bank of Ghana has NEVER announced the withdrawal of these coins from circulation. The 10p, 20p, and 50p coins remain official legal tender in Ghana, and no trader, trotro mate, vendor, or private individual has the authority to reject them at will.
This growing behaviour is not only unlawful but also contributing silently to the increasing cost of living in the country. Because many sellers refuse to accept pesewa coins or give proper change, prices are being unfairly rounded up. Goods that should cost GH₵3.50 suddenly become GH₵4.00, and items worth GH₵4.60 are pushed to GH₵5.00 all because some people have illegally decided that pesewa coins are “useless.”
This is economic indiscipline, and it is hurting ordinary citizens every single day.
The continuous rejection of coins weakens confidence in our national currency, encourages hidden inflation, and places unnecessary financial pressure on Ghanaians already struggling with economic hardship.
We are therefore calling on the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, transport unions, and all relevant authorities to urgently intervene through nationwide public education and strict enforcement measures. Ghanaians must be reminded that refusing legal tender is unacceptable and must not become part of our national culture.
Respect the Cedi.
Respect the Pesewa.
Protect the ordinary Ghanaian consumer.
