The Minority in Parliament has questioned the Foreign Affairs Ministry over how reintegration grants paid to 442 minors were handled during Ghana’s evacuation from South Africa.

Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, raised the concern at a press conference on Saturday, October 11, 2026, after reviewing documents obtained from the Ministry through a Right to Information (RTI) request.

According to Mr. Ayeh, out of 1,508 evacuees listed in the register, 442 were minors, including children born in 2022, 2023, 2025 and as recently as 2nd February 2026.

He said the Ministry’s response did not clarify whether the GH¢5,000 reintegration grant and GH¢500 transportation allowance paid to adults were also paid to the children, and how such payments involving minors were managed.

The Minority is asking whether the funds for the minors were paid directly to the children or through their parents or guardians, and what safeguarding measures were put in place to ensure the money reached the intended beneficiaries.

“Whether the sum were paid to them directly or to their parent or to their guidance on their behalf, or what safeguarding arrangement, if any, attended the handling of cash payment involving children. This is not trivial oversight,” Mr. Ayeh said.

The Minority says the issue forms part of its broader call for an audit into the GH¢49.72 million spent on the evacuation exercise.
