ARTICLE:
As Ghana prepares to join the rest of the world to mark World Food Day on October 16, residents of Sekondi-Takoradi are raising concerns over rising food prices and calling for urgent action.
This year’s World Food Day, usually a celebration of food security and agricultural resilience, is instead highlighting the economic pressure on households as prices of basic food items continue to soar.
Ahead of the commemoration, community leaders, market associations and residents in the Western Region are appealing to local authorities and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to introduce measures to stabilize prices and improve supply chains.
They are calling for interventions to reduce transport and logistics costs for perishable goods, expansion of local silos and cold-storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses, and improved access to farm inputs to boost local production.
Other demands include stronger market monitoring to protect consumers from speculative pricing while ensuring fair returns for farmers.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency to Takoradi Market Circle, Kojokrom and Sekondi markets showed that although food items were available, prices of tomatoes, onions, local rice and fish had increased noticeably.
Many residents say World Food Day should not only be about food availability but also affordability and accessibility.
“Average household incomes are struggling to keep pace with rising living costs, making it difficult for low and middle-income families to meet nutritional needs,” a shopper, Madam Eunice Appiah, told GNA.
World Food Day 2026 is being marked globally under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”
